The Garden

Creation of the White Oak Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden

Planted in May 2012 by the Near Northwest Community Improvement Corporation and Heidi Sheesly of Treesearch Farms, along with community donors and volunteers, the White Oak Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden hosts a number of native plants. It attracts visitors daily – as well as butterflies, bees, and birds! More than 30 volunteers lead by Heidi Sheesley and Tilo Villaneuva began this amazing educational garden. Thanks to our Garden volunteers who have worked on planting and clean-up days, as well as on our Plant Sales.

Glauser-McNair donated the overall site design, and fundraising began for the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden component. The NNCIC hosted the first Spring Plant Sale in April 2012, drawing on volunteer Master Gardeners and local volunteers to run the sale. Heidi Sheesley donated her services to lead a “plant talk” prior to the sale.

Ligustrum removal, ground preparation, walkway and bench installation happened in April 2012. Thanks to in-kind donors Tomorrow’s Design, Cowboy Trucking, and IPC Building Products. 900 plants were put in place, mainly with volunteer labor, over two Saturdays in May 2012. Scotts Miracle-Gro and several individuals made donations that made the project possible. Ensuing Plant Sales have funded further development and maintenance of the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden.

Remaining steps for the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden include installation of a solar-powered water feature and the design, fabrication, and installation of climbing structures for vines.
